EV Winter Range in Ontario: What the Real CAA Data Says (And How to Prep Your EV in Ingersoll)

For many electric vehicle owners, the first cold-weather drive raises the same question: how much range will I lose this winter?

The honest answer is that winter range does drop. In a Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) winter test, electric vehicles travelled 14% to 39% less than their official Natural Resources Canada range ratings in temperatures between approximately -7°C and -15°C.

That may sound concerning, but it does not mean your EV suddenly becomes unreliable. Most of the reduction is a normal, temporary response to cold temperatures, cabin heating, winter tires, and road conditions. With a few practical habits and a professional seasonal inspection, you can drive confidently throughout an Ingersoll winter.

What CAA’s Ontario winter EV test found

CAA’s winter test was designed to show how electric vehicles perform in real Canadian conditions rather than relying only on laboratory ratings.

It is important to understand what these numbers mean. Official range ratings are useful for comparing vehicles, but they are not a promise of the exact distance you will travel on every drive. Your speed, route, temperature, wind, tire choice, heating settings, traffic, and driving style all affect the result.

A vehicle rated for 400 kilometres, for example, might provide roughly 250 to 340 kilometres in challenging winter conditions. Your actual results may be better or worse depending on the day.

Why does an EV lose range in cold weather?

Several factors work together. Think of your EV’s battery like a person exercising outdoors: it can still do the job, but it needs more energy to perform efficiently in the cold.

Cold slows battery chemistry

Electric vehicle batteries work through chemical reactions. When the battery is cold, those reactions become less efficient. The vehicle may limit power temporarily, and more energy may be used to warm the battery to its preferred operating temperature.

This is why a cold-soaked EV can show a lower range estimate immediately after starting. As the battery warms during driving, the estimate may change.

The reduction is usually not permanent battery damage. When temperatures return to milder levels, your EV will generally recover much of its normal efficiency.

Cabin heat uses battery energy

A gas-powered vehicle produces a lot of waste heat from its engine. An EV does not have the same engine heat available, so it must use electrical energy to warm the cabin.

If you set the cabin temperature high and drive for a long time, the heater can consume a noticeable amount of energy. The effect is especially noticeable on short trips, when the vehicle spends a larger share of the journey warming the cabin.

Winter tires and road conditions increase resistance

Winter tires are essential for traction and safety, but their tread compounds and patterns can create more rolling resistance than some all-season tires. Snow, slush, standing water, and icy roads add even more resistance.

Cold air can also increase aerodynamic drag slightly, while winter winds make the battery work harder at highway speeds.

Tire pressure drops in cold temperatures

As temperatures fall, tire pressure falls too. Underinflated tires create more rolling resistance, reduce handling precision, and can lower range.

Always use the pressure listed on your vehicle’s driver-door placard or in the owner’s manual. The number on the tire sidewall is usually the maximum pressure, not the recommended setting for your vehicle.

How to prepare your EV for winter in Ingersoll

The best winter strategy is not to chase one perfect range number. It is to reduce avoidable energy loss and give yourself a comfortable buffer.

1. Precondition while the vehicle is plugged in

Use your EV’s scheduled departure or preconditioning feature whenever possible. This warms the cabin and, on many vehicles, helps bring the battery to a more efficient temperature before you leave.

6. Plan for winter range instead of summer range

Do not wait until the battery is nearly empty before looking for a charger. On longer trips, plan with a reasonable winter buffer and identify charging locations before you leave.

Highway speeds, strong headwinds, heavy snow, and extreme cold can all reduce efficiency more quickly than expected. A little extra planning can prevent unnecessary stress if traffic slows or a charging station is busy.

Routine maintenance still matters on an electric vehicle. EVs do not need oil changes, but they do have tires, brakes, suspension, heating and cooling systems, charging components, and a 12-volt battery.
